## OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH TUTORING PROGRAM

#### OUR PHILOSOPHY OF MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH EDUCATION

When it comes to middle school math education, we believe that teaching concepts and general frames of thinking is the most valuable pedagogy method that can be used. The nitty-gritty details of the math will come in due time. What’s most important is that the kids are thinking about the big ideas of math. We want to help middle school students learn the absolute fundamental ideas.

But we don’t believe in directly saying, “these are the 5 big ideas and now we’re going to teach them to you.” No. Instead, we dive-in on some work. We dive-down-deep on a discovery. We are going to help them discover for themselves what these 5 core ideas are. So we start asking the students questions and get them thinking about things. Then, once they’ve discussed and debated amongst themselves about what, say, a function is, then they can finally be taught what it is. And they will immediately recognize it and say, “of course, I *know* what a function is. I’ve work with these things before.”

That’s one example of how we would help students set foot on their own discovery of a fundamental big idea of math. We would simply create the right learning environment for them, and encourage them to ask good questions and think deeply.

The evidence is clear. This sort of self-directed learning leads to both deeper and longer-lasting learning gains.
