HIGH SCHOOL MATH TUTORING
OUR HIGH SCHOOL MATH TUTORING PROGRAM
OUR PHILOSOPHY OF HIGH SCHOOL MATH EDUCATION
When students get to the high school level, they really need to be learning mathematics actively. We believe that lectures aren’t enough at this age. Kids need to engage with the material. But that never happens with lectures. Students zone out and tune the teacher out. This is also how some students get left behind. Lectures inherently leave some students behind.
That’s why active learning is so powerful. Active learning helps to ensure that everyone is truly learning the material. We’ve seen many high school students really buy into this process and way of teaching. But there is often some resistance at first.
We try to incorporate active learning in all of our high school mathematics tutoring. We ask questions. We seek to engage students. And we even give them the responsibility for teaching us some of the concepts! This allows them ownership of their own learning. Without ownership and total buy-in, most high school students are never going to give mathematics 100% effort.
In our tutoring process we believe in coming-along side our students as peers. We aren’t “one-up” on them. Most teachers and professors take a “one-up” role. They are the professor with so much wisdom. However, this means that the student must be “one-down.” A lot of tutors and tutoring companies work this way as well. They try to create that power-dynamic. At Math Tutor Austin we do things differently. We come-alongside students and engage with them. We are exploring and learning right alongside them. We don’t simply provide answers or complete homework for them. We ask the right questions. We ask questions that nudge them on the right track and get their thinking headed in the proper direction and using solid frameworks & mental models.
